RAHARA N.S. GREEN SCHOOL

Green-Schools is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.

It is a long-term programme that introduces students, teachers, parents and the wider community to the concept of an environmental management system. It fosters a strong sense of citizenship and leadership among participants that spreads far outside the school into the wider community. It brings children into the decision-making process and makes them responsible for their decision and actions.

We got involved in the Green Schools Initiative in 2005. We worked towards our first flag with the help of Olywyn Cooney, Environmental Officer, Roscommon Co. Council.

At our first meeting it was decided that litter and waste management were the areas of most concern within our school.
A large bin was being sent to the landfill each week. It was only during the last few weeks of last school year that we received the blue bin from Barna Waste for paper recycling. We decided to place a great emphasis on sorting our waste. The purchase of a paper shredder would help with this. All pupils to be encouraged to use the compost bin for apple cores, skins etc.

Our green Code was See It. Pick it. Bin it.

We were awarded our first Green flag in June 2005.

Dara Finnerty Warren Boyle Barry MC Donnell Thomas Doyle
Conor Fallon,Liam Kenny, Sean Kenny and Niall Mc Donnell.

We decided that we would look at ways to conserve energy in the classrooms and in the school as a whole. We also decided to inform all the families in our school and to encourage them to become conscious of energy conservation.
We decided to check the temperature of each classroom at 11.00 am and 12.30 pm and 2.00 pm each day for three weeks.
We set up a rota of energy teams to check that the windows and doors are kept closed at all times.

We continued to monitor our litter and waste.

Our motto was See it. Flick it. Save it.
