Jonathan's Story

Many Holy Wells are associated with St. Patrick. They give us an idea of his travels in Co. Roscommon. There are 20 wells listed in the folklore of Co. Roscommon.Cluain Patrick at Kilmore, Athleague is one of these. All the wells were built in the good ground of the Upper Classes. St. Patrick concentrated his teaching on the upper class landed gentry. If he succeeded in converting them he hoped their subjects would follow their example.
The well at Cluain Patrick is a circular grotto with a statue of St. Patrick. An annual pilgrimage takes place on the last Sunday in July each year. Pilgrims circle the stone 15 times , each time throwing a leaf or twig into the circular hole by way of counting.
In 1996 the local priest Fr. E. Mac Loughlin had an altar errected and Mass is now celebrated twice a year at the well- St. Patricks day and the last Sunday in July.
