SPORTS....

In our school we play a large variety of sports. We play hurling, football, soccer and basketball, amongst others. This is an important part of our curriculum as a healthy body leads to a healty mind.

Our parish G.A.A. Club is St. Dominics Club in Knockcroghery and other clubs in our wider catchment area include Four Roads and Athleague. With such a large number of clubs there is always friendly rivalry between the students.

Hurling
Prionsias Killion is a Connaught Hurling Coach. He comes to our school every second week to train us in hurling skills. We learn to block, bat, catch, strike, hook and tackle. We also learn the skills of free taking and side-line taking. We spend the first half hour practising the skills. Then we pick two teams and play a game. Each year we take part in Cuman na mBunscol Roscommon. We play teams from the other schools in our area. In October each year we play in the "Sean Lohan" competition. This competition is all ground hurling. We won our division in this competition last year. But we were beaten in the quarter finals. In March each year we play in the two-teacher schools hurling competitions. Last year we played matches against Ballintlieva N.S., St. John's N.S. and Glanduff N.S. in the first round.

In 2003 we won the division1 hurling final. We defeated the Abbey National in a very tight game of hurling.

In 2005 we reached the Sean Lohan Ground Hurling Final and were narrowly defeated by Tisrara N.S. We won the Division1 Hurling Final in June 2005. We played Tarmon in a very exciting game.

We play camogie in our school too. We won the Division 5 final in 2000. In 2001 we won Division 3 final. But in 2002 we won the division one final. We only had a panel of eight girls. In the first round we were beaten by the girls from Fuerty N.S. but we then beat Ballintlieva N.S., Mount Talbot, and Glanduff. In the next round we beat the girls from Athleague N.S. In the semi final we beat the girls from Four Mile House N.S. We were through to the county final and our opponents were the girls from Fuerty N.S. It was a great, exciting game of camogie. There was great excitement when we won.The panel of players were: Natascha Cammeraat, Fiona Fallon, Emma Doyle, Stacey Doyle, Roisin Connaughton, Orla Fallon, Caitriona Bannon and Laura Doyle.

We love to play soccer in our school too. Martin Conboy organises soccer training for us every two weeks. Two soccer trainers come and teach us a lot of soccer skills. If it is wet we train on the yard. Each year we play in the six aside Ribena F.A.I.S. (Football Association of Ireland) soccer competitions. We also participate in the 7 aside competitions organised by the Roscommon Primary Schools Committee.
