We have completed our Blue Star Award 2015 project and submitted it for inspection. The pupils covererd the four areas which included EU Geography, EU History, EU Culture and the Institutions of the EU. We also celebrated Europe Day on May 8th and hosted an EU food tasting fair!

Europe Day Celebrations
Pupils will celebrate Europe Day on Friday 8th May. Parents and family are invited to EU tasting fair and exhibition @ 1pm in the school hall.
Orange Day- 1st May
Wear something orange on Friday May 1st for “Join Our Boys Trust”. Please donate €2 to the trust. See www.joinourboys.org Help to defeat Muscular Dystrophy.
Due to a change in the weather, there has been a change of plan and the DPS energy workshop will take place in Rahara NS tomorrow Friday 24th April. All pupils will investigate a wind turbine and design and make a model wind turbine in our school. Infants can remain in school until 3pm.
School will be closed on Monday 4th & Tuesday 5th May.
School will be closed on Friday 22nd May for polling in the upcoming referendum.
The junior school tour will take place on Thursday 11th June. Pupils will visit Turoe Pet Farm. The tour cost is €30 per pupil which includes admission and transport.
The senior school tour will take place on Tuesday 23rd June. We will visit Rooskey River Adventure centre and participate in water sports (kayaking, pier jumping, raft- building and land sports (assaut course, mud slide, climbing wall and team- building games). The cost of the tour is €40 per pupil, which includes activities and transport.
Testing for 1st – 6th classes will take place between 18th and 29th May. Please ensure your child is present during said period.
School Self Evaluation
Oral Language: Special Interest Talks resumed for Term 3. All SIT will be assessed. Please ensure your child prepares a mind-map and uses this oral language framework when preparing his/her SIT. These are untimed!
Problem Solving: The 1st, 2nd and senior pupils have started weekly Problem Solving Comprehension Cards. Pupils must complete rough work in the notebook provided. Results will be recorded in your child’s notebook.
First Holy Communion
First Holy Communion takes place on Sunday 3rd May @ 10am in Rahara church.

Junior Entrepreneur Programme
The senior room have completed their Junior Entrepreneur Project. All 100 badges were sold and the sales team are ordering more badges! The Showcase day was a huge success and we would like to thank the parents for their continuing support.

The bus departs Knockcroghery NS @ 9am. Return time TBC. The cost of the bus is €10 per child.
We were delighted to see our pupils feature on News2day on 11th February. A special thank-you to Alan Moran for providing a copy of the DVD to all families.
Our Green Schools inspector visited Rahara NS on Tuesday 24th February, to inspect all the work we have done over the last 2 years on “Global Citizenship- Litter & Waste”. We were thrilled with the feedback we received and are looking forward to our official notification by An Táisce in Term 3.
We are delighted to welcome Elaine Connolly to our staff. Elaine will be working in Rahara NS for the rest of the school year.
World Happiness Day
Pupils and Staff will participate in World Happiness Day activities on Friday 20th March. Evidence shows that promoting kindness and happiness among young people directly affects social and emotional well being!
FAI Soccer Competition
Senior pupils will participate in a soccer schools competition on Wednesday 11th in Lecarrow. We will need lifts to and from the pitch. Please let us know if any parent is available to assist with lifts.

World Book Day 2015
We celebrated World Book Day in Rahara NS in style. Pupils dressed up as a character from a book. Pupils also shared their favourite book with their peers and gave an oral presentation to their class. Pupils designed a World Book Day token!
St Patrick’s Day
School will be closed on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th March for St Patrick’s Day.
A “Fairtrade Café” took place in school on Friday 6th March. Pupils enjoyed Fairtrade hot chocolate, tea, coffee along with Fairtrade cookies or bananas! Pupils learned about Fairtrade around the globe. This is in conjunction with our Green Flag for Global Citizenship.
Discover Primary Science & Maths Award
We have almost completed this year’s award. The remaining step requires a visit to a windfarm. We will visit Niamh Connor’s windfarm in Castlerea on Friday 24th April. Following this we will submit our DPS application!

HSE staff will carry out vaccinations with Junior Infants and Sixth class pupils this Tuesday & Thursday. Please return all forms. If you do not wish your child to participate please indicate this on your form.

Catholic Schools Week
All pupils are participating in Catholic Schools Week this week ( 26th – 30th Jan). Teachers will deliver lessons and place emphasis on “Kindness and random acts of kindness”
Soccer training will resume on Wednesday @ 1pm.
Hurling takes place on Tuesdays @ 11:30am
Mrs McGowan will start her maternity leave on Monday 2nd March. The BOM will meet this week and appoint a teacher to cover the leave.

Junior Entrepreneur Programme
The senior room are participating in the JEP. On Friday 23rd January we held a “Dragons Den” in our hall. Four teams presented their “ideas” to the dragons. Local business woman, Nuala Dolan of Dolan Foods, kindly took part as a dragon. An enjoyable experience was had by all. The Dragons Den was a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to use their oral language skills, presentation skills, and practical maths. It was an exceptional morning and we are very proud of all the ideas. The “Big Idea” has now been chosen and all pupils will work together to design and create our Green Schools badges for retail.
TV crews and TV presenter Orla Walsh, from RTE’s News2day children’s TV programme, will visit our school in the coming weeks. They will talk to pupils about the global problem of litter and waste in our oceans. They will edit our own recording of the Skype call to the scientist in December and include pupils in the news bulletin. We are really looking forward to this experience in the coming weeks. The programme will then be aired on News2day.

WW1 History Field Trip
The senior pupils travelled to Ballyjamesduff on Friday 28th November to visit Cavan County Museum and the WW1 Trench experience. This was a brilliant opportunity for the children to explore the WW1 trench experience. For more information visit : www.cavanmuseum.ie
Cash for Clobber
We would like to thank you all for all your clothing donations. We collected 42 bags of recyclable materials and raised €130 for our school.
All pupils are developing a Green Schools “Global citizenship – litter & waste” code and poster. On Thursday 18th December 1st – 6th class pupils participated in a Skype call with scientist, Leighton Rolley, who is on board a research ship in the Pacific Ocean. The children asked the scientist questions about his job and the problem of rubbish in our oceans and the “Pacific Garbage Patch”. He encouraged us to recycle ALL our rubbish and prevent further pollution.
All pupils participated in a SEAI energy workshop in school on Friday last 12th December.
A Wooly Nice Tale
OM Ireland visited our school on Tuesday 16th December and the children enjoyed a performance of “A Wooly Nice Tale”. This was a fantastic production and embraced the true meaning of Christmas.
We are collecting items associated with restaurants for role-play in the junior room. We are also low on materials for “junk art” and would appreciate any materials people gather over the holidays e.g. old decorations, sweet/wrapping paper, tins, boxes, etc.
Mrs. Costello will take graduation leave on 5th & 6th January 2015. Mrs. Costello is graduating from Waterford IT with a Masters in Management in Education. Mrs. Burke and Ms. O’Reilly will cover both days.
We finish on Friday 19th December @ 12:30pm for Christmas. Children may wear their “Christmas Jumper and Santa Hat”!

Blue Star Award
Senior pupils interviewed Luke Ming Flanagan, MEP on Friday 12th December. Mr Flanagan spent an hour and a half with the pupils and answered all the questions they had prepared for him. Now the pupils will create a project entitled “A day in the life of an MEP”.
County photo will be visiting Rahara NS to take individual/family photos on Friday 9th January 2015.
Junior Entrepreneur Programme
The senior room will participate in the JEP over 10-12 week period during Jan – March 2015. Pupils will generate individual and team project ideas and through a process of negotiation, presentation and pitching to the “Dragons” the pupils will reach agreement on their JEP “Big Idea”. Pupils are allowed to brainstorm at home with family about a product or service they would like to design, develop, market and sell. We are looking forward to starting the JEP in 2015!

Science week took place from 10th -14th November. The senior pupils attended a Science Magic Show in the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon. Pupils participated in various experiments including piercing a balloon with a skewer, flame test, foam snake and cloud in a bottle. The pupils had a most enjoyable experience.
Back in Rahara NS all classes participated in hands-on science experiments for Science Week.
Senior pupils made soil soup, concrete blocks and investigated warm air. The junior pupils investigated how plants drink. They investigated sounds and cleaned dirty water.
Public Health Nurse
Our Public Health Nurse visited our school on Monday 10th November and carried out check up’s on junior infants and 6th class pupils.
Blue Star Award
The pupils are participating in the Blue Star Awards. As part of this EU initiative the pupils are learning about the EU, its parliament and the life of EU MEP’s. We have invited Luke Ming Flanagan (MEP) to our school on Friday 12th December. The pupils will interview Mr. Flanagan and learn more about the day to day life of an MEP.
Numeracy - SSE
We would like to express our thanks to all the parents who are collaborating with their children for the weekly problem solving tasks. We understand that this is sometimes an onerous task but are delighted with these Numeracy home-school links that have been established. Please continue to discuss the problems using our strategy RUDE (Read, underline, draw & estimate) Take time to listen to your child as they try out their ideas, without directing them to a particular strategy. Correct answers are important however developing a capacity to use a correct problem solving process needs to be the higher priority. As in secondary school, teachers award marks for rough work and effort.
A SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) primary schools workshop will take place on Friday 12th December in our school. This workshop will help pupils have a better awareness of energy and climate change. Pupils will participate in various experiments and an “energy game”.
Pupils are learning about the theme of “Global –litter and Waste”. All pupils will learn about the life cycle of a “plastic bottle” and the problems of plastic litter in the worlds oceans.
In conjunction with this, the pupils will participate in a Skype call to oceanographer, Dr. Leighton Rolley, who is currently based onboard the “Falkor” ship in the Pacific ocean. Dr. Rolley will discuss the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” and take questions from our pupils! This is a fantastic opportunity for our cohort of pupils to have live links with the Pacific ocean.

Swimming lessons are on Wednesdays until Christmas. Soccer will resume in January. Gaelic training will resume in March. Hurling will continue every Tuesday.
Cake sale for Alzheimer’s
A cake sale for the Alzheimer’s association will be held in Rahara NS on Sunday 7th December after 10am mass.
WW1 History Field Trip
The senior pupils will participate in a History Field Trip on Friday 28th November to Cavan County Museum. This visit promises to be an interactive and hands-on history experience for the pupils. Pupils will visit a “trench” and see and touch WW1 artefacts. The BOM will cover the cost of the bus. Pupils are to pay the €2 cover charge. There is a shop in the museum and I would appeal to parents to give a maximum of €3 spending money (€5 in total).
Pupils must wear their school uniforms and bring a packed lunch. Mobile phones are not permitted. Hand held devices may be brought, but each child is responsible for their own devices. Teachers will not take responsibility for any electronic devices.
The Library van will continue to visit our school every month. Our next visit is scheduled for Tuesday 9th December.
Parent Teacher meetings will take place during week 1st -5th December. Please contact the teacher if your time/date does not suit.
We are collecting Christmas materials/decorations for Santa’s grotto/workshop in the junior room.

A huge congratulations to all the pupils for their success in the Maths Week 2014 Target Board competitions. The junior room came in 7th place in Ireland while the senior room came in 2nd place! The pupils displayed great determination all week and we are very proud of their maths ability!
Parent Teacher meeting will take place during the first week of December.

Blue Star Programme
All pupils will participate in the Blue Star Programme in 2014-15. It is an initiative that aims to foster better knowledge and understanding of the EU and how it affects our lives, through classroom projects and activities. The goal of the programme is to foster a strong sense of citizenship and leadership among participants that goes far beyond the school walls of Rahara NS! As part of the project we have invited MEP, Luke “Ming” Flanagan to visit our school to learn about “a day in the life of an MEP”. Mr Flanagan hopes to visit in November, in between his visits to Brussels!
Junior Entrepreneur Progaramme

Mrs McGowan is currently collecting any resources you may have in connection with the theme “Doctors” e.g. blankets, dolls, uniforms, old phones, toy ambulance, doctor sets, etc. Aistear uses different types of play to support children’s learning across the curriculum.
If you wish to order a Christmas annual for your child please return €2 to school on/before this Friday 24th October.
Swimming resumes for all pupils on Wednesday 5th November between 11-12. Parents, if available, are welcome to come to the pool to assist with drying and dressing their child/children. . Staff may assist with drying and changing in exceptional circumstances (e.g. if a child is distressed or becomes ill). Staff dressing/drying pupils in these circumstances must ensure they have another member of staff or another pupil present in these circumstances. Staff will report the drying/ changing to the child’s parents at the first possible opportunity.
Cost of swimming is to be confirmed and parents will be notified as soon as it is available.

This is a great way to fundraise for our school whilst raising awareness of textile recycling amongst children. “Clobber” may be placed in black bin liners. Our collection date is this Friday 24th October.
Dress up for GOAL
Pupils may dress up this Friday in their Halloween costumes. Please give a donation to GOAL, who are working to help Ebola victims in Serra Leone and Liberia.

The (DLP) Designated Liasion person is Mrs. Costello. The Deputy DLP is Mrs. McGowan. Our Child Protection policy is updated annually and is available on our school website.
We are obliged to inform (Tusla) the statutory Educational Welfare services of the child and family agency, if a child has missed 20 days or more in the school year. If your child cannot attend school please provide the school with a written note outlining the reason for the absence. For further information see www.tusla.ie
If you wish to withdraw your child during the school day, please collect your child from the front door and fill in the “sign in/out” book on the table.
School Door Bell
For security reasons we have installed a school door bell. Only staff members can answer the door and it is locked, from the inside, during class time.
We have an open-door policy for parents, so please call in or make an appointment to talk to any staff member.
School Self Evaluation
We will continue to focus on the development of vocabulary and oral language in this school year. We saw great success in the improvement of oral language scores and reading fluency in 2013-14. In Term 3, we introduced Peer Tutoring to all pupils. Over an 8 week period we saw an improvement in our pupil’s reading age by an average of 9 months. We are thrilled with these scores and are looking forward to sustaining and improving our great results.
Roscommon library van will visit our school once a month for this school year. Pupils are invited to change their books. We have introduced “DEAR” time (Drop Everything And Read) into our daily timetable. Pupils are encouraged to spend 10 minutes reading for pleasure. This is in conjunction with our improving literacy strategy for 2014-15.
This year we will focus on improving pupil’s problem solving ability in Maths.
We are delighted to welcome Ms. Kym O’Reilly to our staff as Learning Support/Resource teacher. Ms O’Reilly will teach in Rahara Tue-Fri and is also available to meet with parents.
Padraig Lohan will continue his role as cleaner/caretaker for the coming year.
Patricia Finneran will continue as secretary and will be here Tuesday and Friday afternoons.
There will be a staff meeting on Thursday 2nd October from 2-4pm. All pupils will finish @2pm on that day.
Maths week will take place in Rahara NS from 13th -17th October. We are already looking forward to this exciting, fun filled online maths event.
Swimming lessons will take place in Roscommon pool on Wednesdays from 11-12, starting on 5th November for 7 weeks.
Book bills will be sent home shortly.
10 new Ipad 4’s have been ordered for our school and should be delivered next Wednesday. These will be shared between all pupils.

Pupils may wear shorts, hats, sandals with a school t-shirt over the coming days. Please ensure your child wears sunblock/cream.
School reports will be posted over the coming days. Reports will include results of standardised tests, school calendar 2014-15, booklists, a “Help My Kids Learn” booklet for parents and an NCCA Sten explaination sheet for parents.
If you wish to order a school jumper, you may browse through the sample jumpers in our school entrance hall and fill in the order sheet.
New infants are invited to our school on Friday 27th June for a taster morning. We are looking forward to meeting our new pupils!
Sixth class graduation dinner party will take place in the school on Tuesday 24th June. Good luck to our graduates on their transition to post-primary school this year!
Special Interest Talks
All pupils will be assessed in the coming days. Please ensure your child prepares and practices their special interest talk at home. A mind map must be prepared in advance of SIT outlining the vocabulary that will be used.
School will close @ 12:30pm on Friday 27th June for Summer holidays. The new school year starts on Thursday 28th August @ 9:20am
Pupils are extremely busy rehearsing for our school play! The play will take place on Thursday 26th June @ 6pm. Pupils will need to arrive at Culleen Hall from 5:15pm to get into costume and make-up.
There will be no interval during the play but we will have a cover charge on the door. Please invite your family and friends along as the play is very entertaining!
Any volunteers, who would like to help with the cover charge on the door, please contact the staff.
On Wednesday 25th & Thursday 26th the pupils will travel by bus to Culleen Hall to rehearse. Pupils must be collected from Culleen Hall next Wednesday & Thursday @ 3pm.

The pupils of Rahara NS are busy with rehearsals for the upcoming production of 'Alas in Blunderland' by Peter Gunning. 'Alas in Blunderland’ is a comic play which is designed to be staged by young performers. In the play, the three bears and the wolves are unhappy about the way they are treated in fairy tales until they learn the stories of Cinderella and Snow White! All is not what it appears to be in the story books!
Auditions took place the first week after the Easter break and all pupils were assigned their parts in the play. The pupils are excitedly learning their lines and preparing their costumes. The play will take place on Thursday evening the 26th June in Culleen Hall at 6pm. Come along for a good evening of entertainment from our cast of 26 pupils!
