Fairtrade Friday 2014

Pupils from Rahara National School participated in Fairtrade Friday celebrations on Friday 7th March. During Fairtrade fortnight the staff delivered lessons on Fairtrade to all pupils throughout the school teaching the pupils all about the concept of ‘Fairtrade’. Pupils learnt that Fairtrade guarantees a better deal for the farmers in developing countries. They also learned about Fairtrade bananas from the Dominican Republic, coffee from Uganda, tea from India and sugar from Malawi.

The school is currently working towards its sixth Green Schools Award for Global Citizenship under the guidance of the Green schools co-ordinator, Mrs. Aoife McGowan. By learning all about Fairtrade the pupils are deepening their understanding of global citizenship.

On Friday 7th March the pupils celebrated Fairtrade Friday when the staff transformed their GP hall into a café! The staff served Fairtrade ONLY products to the pupils. The pupils enjoyed Fairtrade hot chocolate, tea, coffee, sugar and Fairtrade chocolate chip cookies. Pupils also participated in a chocolate taste test, sampling both Fairtrade and non-Fairtrade chocolate and distinguishing the difference between the two.

A Fairtrade poster competition took place and the two winners, Beckham Janzen and Rachel Fallon, both received a €5 Marks & Spencer’s voucher each. The prize was sponsored by M&S, Athlone.

The staff of Rahara NS has converted their staff room into a Fairtrade staffroom. Only Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar will be available to all visitors to our school from here on in! Rahara NS hopes to become a Fairtrade school and gain the Fairtrade School award!
